“Oh please, don’t sell me out”
Said the man with the hammer hammering the anvil
”I’ve been walking on the road of rocks
I keep on hammering, keep on hammering
Keep on hammering, hammering the anvil
I started my third sculpture: a male arm holding a hammer.
For people who know me, the connection is easy to make. After sharing a story on Instagram, a lot of friends jokingly asked where the sickle was. But even those who don’t know my political views immediately asked if I’m a communist. I feel like this one will be the piece that reflects me the most in clay.
Working on this thing also made me realize the progress I’ve made this year. My tutor helped me build the armature for the sculpture but then he was absent from the studio. Which means I worked on this with absolutely zero guidance from him and I’m proud of what I accomplished after ~10 hours of working on this myself.
While taking reference photos of my hand holding the hammer, I accidentally created this gem. If my face were in the frame, it could be a great album cover:
Can this photo be considered art? Photoni.st says the the intention of making art is a constitutive feature of photography as art. My intention was absolutely to make art—in a different medium. Anyway, go read his article, it’s the best thing I read last week.
On the entertainment side, we started watching Archive 81. The first two episodes were great and I’m really intrigued. I think this series will push me to write about hauntology.
We also watched Ready or Not (2019). It was a meh but enjoyable movie. It’s now part of my “fucking rich people” movies list.
I’ll be writing my next weekly update in Amsterdam and will be there till September 12. If you’d like to have a coffee, let me know!
